ATTENTION VETERANS! Don't get tricked!

03/14/2024

The Coffey County Sheriff's Office recently investigated at least two instances where veterans were tricked into paying a company for a service that is statutorily provided free of charge.

In these instances, a company by the name of DD214 Direct charged  said individuals to obtain a copy of their military records and file them with the Coffey County Register of Deeds Office.

Veterans should be aware that the DD Form 214 is a military report of separation that provides proof of military service. There are multiple reasons why you may need a copy of this form.  A military veteran or veterans family member can request a copy of their military records, including DD-214 through the U.S. Department of Veteran Affairs website. For safe keeping and ease of access, veterans are encouraged to file a copy of this form with their local registrar, in Coffey County, that is with the Register of Deeds Office. There is no cost to obtain or file the DD Form 214.

Upon further inquiry, our office found that the Cobb Judicial Circuit in Marietta, Georgia issued a similar warning to their veterans regarding this exact issue. Click Here to read their press release.

The DD214 Direct business page with the Better Business Bureau also shows a consumer alert for a pattern of complaints, "BBB files indicate that this business has a pattern of complaints. Specifically, consumer complaints allege to BBB that there are substantial delays in the delivery of their requested DD214. Some consumers also advise the business is denying refunds or advise a supervisor will be in contact for their refund request; however consumers allege no callbacks are being received."

Our main concern is protecting military veterans from paying unjust fees to obtain and file military records that are available  FREE to you. Please do not pay third party companies to obtain and/or file your DD Form 214.

Instead, obtain a copy of your form by
