Offender Registration
The Coffey County Sheriff's Office is responsible for maintaining all registered offender's information within Coffey County and reporting that information to the Kansas Bureau of Investigation. The Sheriff's Office regularly checks compliance of offenders and files reports on non-compliant offenders to the Coffey County Attorney's Office.
Kansas has 3 types of registered offenders - Sexual, Violent, and Drug.

Violation of the Kansas Offender Act can be a felony-level offense. We work with each offender during this time to help everyone stay compliant. Non-compliance will be investigated, and charges could be forwarded to the Coffey County Attorney's Office.

Offenders must register with the registering law enforcement agency within three (3) days of entering into any county to reside, maintain employment, or attend school. The offender is required to provide all requested personal information to include addresses, Vehicle Information, License Plate information, Alias Name information, Descriptions and Locations of Scars, Marks and Tattoos, Employment Information, Telephone Numbers, School information, Passport Numbers, Immigration Numbers, and any mental health treatment/services being received. An offender must report all email addresses, online identities, any personal web pages or online social networks and internet screen names.

I am transient, does this change my registration requirement? Yes, transient offenders are required to register with the registering law enforcement office every thirty (30) days, in person, or more frequently at the discretion of the registering office. A list of places where they have slept and frequented during the thirty (30) days should be provided to the registering agency. If able, transient offenders are to provide a list of places they may sleep or stay at prior to their next registration date as well as possible means of contact.
I am indigent and unable to pay, what can I do? Payment is required unless the offender has been deemed indigent by a Kansas court. Contact the County Attorney's Office in the county of residence.
Offender Registration is required to be completed in person four (4) times per year. After the initial first-time court mandated registration, the offender must report in the month of their birthday and every third, sixth and ninth month thereafter. A $30.00 fee is required those (4) times per year. This fee includes $20 for registration and $10 for offender technology fee.
Vehicle information required: Please bring a copy of registration for each vehicle owned or used by the offender to each registration appointment.
Inpatient Treatment: If an offender is receiving inpatient treatment, they are to inform the treatment facility of their status as an offender and inform the local law enforcement agency of their presence in the county they are receiving treatment.
Kansas Driver's License or Kansas State I.D.: Offenders are required to annually renew their driver's license and identification card (KSA 22-4905(m). All other state driver's licenses or state I.D.s must be relinquished. In Kansas the registered offender (RO) number must appear on the driver's license or I.D. in the bottom left corner. In order for the process to work all identifiers in the Kansas Offender Registration Tool database must match the identifiers in the Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) system, including name and date of birth and the license must be marked current. If there are any issues or concerns, we recommend contacting the DMV directly or the Sheriff's Office of the county of residence.
Juvenile Offender Kansas Driver's License or Kansas State I.D.: juvenile offenders are required to have their registered offender (RO) number on their driver's license or state I.D. If not old enough to have a driver's license they are encouraged to get a state I.D.
Visiting Kansas: Offenders visiting Kansas must register if they are or plan to be in Kansas for three (3) consecutive days or parts of days or ten (10) or more non-consecutive days in a period of thirty (30) consecutive days. Once the offender arrives in Kansas, he or she will need to register at the Sheriff's Office in the county in which they are or will be residing, working or attending school. Before he or she leaves Kansas, they will be required to register at the Sheriff's Office.
Travel outside of the United States requires in person reporting and written notice to the K.B.I. Offender Registration Unit twenty-one (21) days prior to the requested travel.

Can an offender have social media? There is no Kansas or federal law stipulating that an offender cannot be active on social media, however, some social media companies do prohibit offenders from having active accounts on their sites. Does Kansas have laws that prohibit offenders from living too close to schools, daycares, or community centers? Kansas does not have a proximity law that mandates where an offender may live, work, or go to school. However, this may be a condition of the offender's supervision.
